What is a gabion?

Gabions (from Italian gabbione meaning "big cage") are cages, cylinders, or boxes filled with stones or sand that are used in civil engineering, road building, and military applications. For erosion control caged riprap is used. Currently Gabions are used in landscape architecture as a decorative element in the form of benches, bins, walls separating the space looks very interesting and is present in a few gardens.
